Synopsis

The play follows Roland, a beekeeper, and Marianne, a cosmologist, through their romantic relationship. Marianne often waxes poetic about cosmology, quantum mechanics, string theory, and the belief that multiple universes pull people’s lives in various directions. This is reflected in the play’s structure as brief scenes are repeated, often with different outcomes.

Roland and Marianne meet at a barbecue and become romantically involved. After they’ve moved in together, a confession of infidelity causes them to break up. After some time, they run into each other at a ballroom dancing class, resume their relationship, and eventually marry. Marianne begins to forget words and has trouble typing. Her doctor tells her that she has a tumor in her frontal lobe and has less than a year to live. She eventually seeks assisted suicide abroad with Roland’s support. The play ends with a flashback to Roland and Marianne’s scene rekindle their relationship in the dance class.

About the Performance

One of my most important art experiences has been this performance: encountering a text that extends the relationship between a couple to cosmic proportions—in its purest form—without resorting to intimidating means and using only dramatic tools. This expansiveness of dramatic works had a greater effect on me as I took it to the stage with my wife. A part of Roland and Marianne will live forever in our relationship. The other significance of this play was introducing the English playwright Nick Payne to the Persian audience for the first time. Even though it was performed for a limited time and in a small auditorium, it received a very positive response from both the general and specific audience.
