About me

Welcome to my World

I’m Ashkan Jenabi; an MFA graduate in Directing from Tehran University of Art, an Actor and a Director who, in addition to Theater, has acted in several short and feature Films and made two short films, and currently is working in the field of Advertising and Communication as a Copywriter and Creative Director. The connection between all these can be summed up in these two terms: Creativity and Dramatic Storytelling.

  • Once upon a time ...

    This is my story ...

    Once upon a time ...
  • A Star is Born!

I was born on August 13, 1984, in Hamedan, one of Iran's western cities. My parents were both teachers. At that time, Iran went through a revolution and was still at war with its western neighbor, Iraq. I still remember the childhood experience of wartime, though vague.

  • Stage Beauty!

My age difference with my siblings was huge, and I had almost no playmates at home. TV and books had become my best friends. I wanted to be the protagonist of a story or a TV character. In my fourth year of elementary school, I went on stage for the first time in a play, which became my most memorable childhood experience.

    Stage Beauty!
  • Almost Famous!

After that fantastic experience of acting at school, I knew I wanted to be an actor. That's when I tried to go to Art school. My parents, however, disagreed, and at their insistence, I studied mathematics and physics. But I finally persuaded them to let me go to private acting and filmmaking classes. In 2000, I completed the Iranian Youth Cinema Association filmmaking course and the theater training course of the Hamedan Performing Arts Association. I soon became involved in theater groups. I acted in more than 20 plays in three years, directed two plays, and received several acting awards from provincial and regional festivals.

    Almost Famous!
  • Accepted!

By finishing high school, it was time to get ready for college. This time, when the family saw my determination to enter the University of Art and Theater Education, they did not stand in the way. In 2003, I was admitted to the Faculty of Cinema and Theater of Tehran University of Art in Theater. It was my favorite university with very competitive admission requirements; So in my entry year, only 13 people were accepted.

    Accepted!
  • In Pursuit of Happyness!

In the same year I entered the university, I was able to join the professional theater groups of the capital. My first serious acting experiences were in Dr. Qutbuddin Sadeghi's group. University was one of the most active periods of my career. I starred in several professional plays, made short films, participated in many academic projects, and was a well-known figure in the theater.

    In Pursuit of Happyness!
  • The Graduate!

Immediately after completing my bachelor's degree, I was accepted to a master's degree in play directing at the same university in 2007. As I continued to pursue practical work in theater, I became more focused on the academic and analytical topics of theater and drama. In 2010, I defended my dissertation on experimental theater in Iran with an excellent grade.

    The Graduate!
  • Up in the Air!

After graduating, my intellectual and aesthetic path towards art in the general sense and theater, in particular, became more evident to me. Therefore, my choices became more limited, and I tried to participate in works related to my artistic approach. For a while, I became a member of the Leev Theater Group under the direction of "Mohammad Hassan Majouni," which resulted in acting in three important plays by Chekhov and directing several monologues at the Monoleev Festival. As an actor, I collaborated with well-known directors such as Mohammad Yaghoubi, Amir Reza Kouhestani, Arvand DashtAray in the theater, and in the cinema with Reza Mirkarimi in the film Today.

    Up in the Air!
  • Mad Men!

In 2013, at the invitation of my friends, I entered the field of advertising and communication as an ideator. At first, I was not supposed to look at it as a permanent job, but I realized I would like to continue after a while. Of course, Iranian theater and cinema's turbulent market also played an essential role in this decision. Daily activities in office environments, interaction with other employees and departments, attention to deadlines, and constraints strengthened my personal and professional discipline as well as my ability to communicate with others in creative settings. During my years as a copywriter and creative director, I developed the ability to lead large teams and projects, strategic thinking, storytelling, and consequentialism.

    Mad Men!
  • Never Rarely Sometimes Always!

I have been less active in theater and cinema and more in creative communication for a while. But I intend to return to the dramatic arts again, with a deeper and fresher approach. I plan to make a film and capture the stories that are currently in my mind.

Before starting my professional career in Tehran, I worked as a semi-professional actor and director in my hometown of Hamedan.

Apart from acting and directing, I have had limited experience translating plays into Persian, teaching acting, writing reviews, and judging at some university festivals.

After a long career in the performing arts, I decided to enter the field of communication and advertising to cultivate my skills in leadership, visual creativity, and communication strategies.
