After her love affair and her son drowned, Madame Ranevskaya has returned from Paris to her ancestral estate and its famous cherry orchard in Russia to freshen up. The property is set to be auctioned off for family debts. Lopakhin, once a peasant, continually warns this bankrupt family to do something about the property before it is too late. But Madame Ranevskaya and her brother Gayev generally do not take her seriously and prefer to spend their time in vanity and philosophy. Eventually, the auction occurs, and Lopakhin, who has now made a fortune, takes possession of the orchard.
This was one of the several plays by Chekhov directed by Majooni, in which I acted. It was a pleasant experience for me to work with famous actors and see the director’s viewpoint toward the text, as a contemporary comedy and his emphasis on delicacies of the roles and moments. My age difference with the character and enacting moments with no dramatic events were the challenges I faced as an actor.
